Sheltered Life

I have occasionally run into problems related to obtaining too large a fraction of my knowledge from books:

• I had no idea who Vera Lynn was when I heard that Pink Floyd song.
• I read the line "Then the fit hit the Shan," without ever recognizing the pun.
• The first I heard of the M25 London Orbital was that it was designed by a junior devil.
• I studied All the King's Men for clues to its State of residence.

Worse still, I would explain my ignorance of pop culture by telling people, "I grew up in a closet." Of course, I had never heard the phrase "out of the closet"...

But worst of all, this is probably still happening and I just don't know it.
